FlushIt - Flushable dog "poop" bags

 

Dog owners, are you tired of the smelly bags left laying around during the week waiting for trash pickup?   Do you long for a better way to dispose of your dog’s waste?  Do you want to reduce our landfills?  Are you wanting to be more “green” but not sure where to start?   Did you know that leaving dog waste lying around is illegal in some communities?   Not only that, but dog waste can contain E. Coli, Coliform, Salmonella and Giardia among other bacteria, parasites, and microorganisms.

 

Pet owners typically have had two acceptable ways to dispose of dog waste, in the trash or buried in the yard. Both methods leave something to be desired.  To bury in the yard you must own the property; ensure that no children, food plants or run off water comes in contact with the waste, and comply with local sanitation laws and regulations.  To put it in the trash, you must keep the bags around until trash pickup, in the summer you have flies and smell as well, and in addition placing in the trash adds to the landfill problem, and landfills can contribute to water pollution.  In some communities it is against the law to put dog waste in the trash.

  

Finally, there is a product that will help you dispose of the dog waste in a common sense way.  FlushIt© is a flushable bag to dispose of dog waste.  FlushIt© is made from a water-soluble film similar to the material that encases dishwasher detergent packets.  The University of Wisconsin Extension in their publication on Pet Waste and Water Quality states “Flush it down the toilet… The water from your toilet goes to a septic system or sewage treatment plant that removes most pollutants from the water….”  Therefore, the best way and most eco-friendly way to take care of dog poop is to flush it down the toilet, just like what we do with our waste.  The sewage system is designed to take care of all the nasty stuff and biodegrade everything safely.  Just imagine what would happen if we all threw our own waste in the trash and did not use toilets.  By using flushable and biodegradable dog poop bags, you will help protect your home and health.

 

What is FlushIt?

FlushIt is a wonderful eco-friendly invention.  It is a bag for dog “poop” that is fully biodegradable and flushable (water soluble), made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA).  It is safe and non-toxic to our environment.  Each FlushIt bag measures approximately 8" X 10".

Why use FlushIt?

America's 71 million dogs produce 29,000 tons of waste each day.  That's close to 10,585 thousand tons of dog poop each year.  Dog poop is the major source of fresh water contamination.  Study has shown that almost 4% of the material in landfills is dog poop.  Even regular non-flushable biodegradable dog waste bags are not designed for all landfills.  Most of the landfills are not designed to biodegrade trash.  They are too tightly packed for biodegradation to happen there.  Without oxygen (when biodegradable bags are either deep inside the landfills or inside another trash bag), these biodegradable bags will not biodegrade and will still overcrowd our landfills and pollute our earth.  Plastic bags can take 100's of years to degrade.  Also throwing poop in the trash may contaminate our fresh water and environment.  The sewer system has been created to properly treat waste to make it safe to recycle back into our environment.  By using FlushIt, we are protecting our planet and our future.

 

Will FlushIt clog my toilet?

FlushIt is water soluble and should not clog your toilet pipes.  You must use common sense and not overload your toilet.  Larger dogs may require more than one bag and flushing per “deposit”.  Once the FlushIt Bag comes in contact with water in the toilet, it softens and becomes safe to flush (bag will not dissolve in your toilet, it only becomes soft and flushable).  It then dissolves in the sewage system.

 

Where are they manufactured?

FlushIt is manufactured in Great Britain.  While we could have chosen to utilize products from China, we chose Great Britain because of the better conditions for the employees as well as a better environmental record.
